An emotional illustration of an attractive Black couple lovingly embracing for the last time, capturing the pain of being separated during slavery - a visual reflection of how historical trauma disrupted Black love and family bonds.

This month, I invited others into a conversation we don’t talk about enough:
The many ways historical trauma has shaped Black love.

In honor of BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, we explored truths that deserve more space.
As a Black woman and therapist, I learned early on –

Many of us learned love in the aftermath of trauma.

Not just the trauma we lived through…
But the kind passed down in silence, sacrifice, and survival.

Black love has been shaped by trauma; deep, generational wounds carried through separation, survival, and grief.

It didn’t start with us.
And that’s why it can feel so hard to change.

What We Inherited

Our ancestors didn’t just survive hard times, they were forced to live through things no one should:

People who loved deeply lost so much.

That kind of pain doesn’t just disappear. It lives on in how we love, what we expect, and how safe we feel in relationships.

What Science Says

Research in epigenetics (the study of how trauma alters gene expression) shows this clearly:

Stress, fear, and emotional pain can be passed down across generations, even without a word being spoken.

So when your body tenses in love…
When your heart braces for abandonment…
When you run from something good because it feels too unfamiliar…

It’s not because something is wrong with you.
It’s your mind remembering what your body never got to forget.

What This Looks Like in Relationships

Ever feel like:

That’s not just a lack of security.
That’s your nervous system asking:

“Is love safe here?”

What Healing Looks Like

We can’t always change what we inherited. But we can change what we pass down.

Healing love means:

That’s why I created Healed Love™
To give emotionally mature singles a space to connect, grow, and love differently.

We can’t always change what we inherited.
But we can change what we pass down.

Let’s continue to date differently.
Let’s continue to heal forward.

Because the way we love… can rewrite legacies.
